North Fork Mountain Trail Hiking
This is a 24 mile trail for 2-3 day backpacking with elevations from 3000 feet to 3795 feet.
At the campsite where FS79 road meets the trail, there was some water in a container in a tree, but you would be wise to have someone drive up and bring you water at that spot.
Once on the top of the ridge, the trail is mostly level, and easy to follow. It goes just below the ridgeline to the East.
Going up to the ridgeline, you will find numerous lookouts with great views of the North Fork Valley and Allegheny Mountain Range.
There is some private property on the Southern third of the trail. Be sure to stay on the trail in these areas, especially if you think you might miss a good view. There are plenty of great views along the trail waiting for you. All the extra use of this trail is creating concerns among landowners, so do not add to their concerns. If you are planning to hike this Southern third of the trail, it is best to call the Potomac Ranger District Office at 304-257-4488, to be sure the sections are open.
